Okay, I'd been listening to a lot of Goldfrapp's Black Cherry album and fell in love with those dirty electronic beats. I had had the album for months but finally sat down to draw inspiration from it and came up with "Asian Girlfriend". I am an otaku and love Japanese culture; manga, anime, Pocky, sushi, and the beauty of all Asian women. Much to my chagrin I've never had an Asian girlfriend so the lyric is wishful thinking. After I had penned it and worked on the demo, I went to a Chinese buffet, not really on purpose, but as I sat there, I began to get self-conscious. For some odd reason I thought the waitress might have heard the song (though it wasn't possible yet) and would judge me. "Hey it's that guy who sang that song. Tee hee." It made me laugh that I'd come up with such an absurd thought. Recording the song was an interesting process. My amp had blown a fuse so I was sans power. I DID have a tiny Danelectro Amp-In-Bag with a 2" speaker and an incredibly crunchy distortion. I basically just miked the tiny speaker and got a wonderfully dirty sound. The synth bass was a bit of a chore because I had to play the notes an octave apart and alternate them back and forth. I also had to put a filter on the vocals in post production because it sounded unsettling otherwise.
