about

The girl who I'd been pursuing for a year suddenly had to leave for several months to Arizona for self-help. Amidst my mediocre job, musical frustration, my love-interest up and left. The only person left was me and I didn't want me around but I was stuck with me. "Enigmatic Foe" is about that darker side of us which encourages us to do the things that aren't in our best interest, then once we DO those things, it makes us feel intense regret. Years later would I drop my name off my recordings and go by "The Enigmatic Foe". It seems to sum up everything I write about: regret, longing, desire, rejection.

lyrics

Oh my, the thought of your betrayal drips down the ballpoint of my pen
So you’re the biggest loser of the century
Write it down, write down, write it down

Oh my, the grim realization
Say goodbye to alternate dimensions
She’s leaving with a ticket for the countryside
But you know she won’t write anymore

I’m my own worst enemy
I only want to be alone
but the enigmatic foe keeps me company

Oh my, when did I stop believing that I could control my impulses?
What I do I shouldn’t, what I should, I don’t
It makes it that much worse just to know you’re gone

I’m my own worst enemy
I only want to be alone
but the enigmatic foe keeps me company

about

The Enigmatic Foe Knoxville, Tennessee

With sharp lyrics, the playful pop bite of the best of the 70s and 80s, and the kind of self-deprecation usually reserved for a Woody Allen movie, Jared Colinger's lyrics run the gamut from the joy of new love to disillusionment with the old, from wanting to like yourself to being afraid of what we have in our minds.

The new music coming in 2023.
