about

I stand by this statement even today: "It's Not Who You Are" is my favourite song I've ever written or recorded. 2004 was a banner year for me, musically speaking. I wrote a crap-ton of material and felt creatively charged. I had taken a vacation to Texas to visit longtime friend and collaborator, James Coffman. We had been playing music together since high school as The Derelllicts with Brad Smith but called it quits in 2000. The three of us have gotten together since to record various things that may or may not see the light of day. Anyway, Jamey and I recorded several songs, cowrote a few, but my personal best were "Sweet Disillusionment" and "It's Not Who You Are". I chose to cut out an instrumental solo in the middle of the song, right before the bridge, because it was clocking in at 6 minutes and it didn't need a solo. To me, everything is perfect about "INWYA" from the lyric, to the chord progression, to the melody, to the harmonies, to the choppy bass line. The melancholy and the lilting drowse of the 6/8 is hypnotic. YES I AM BRAGGING, DAMNIT! This was a pinnacle achievement for me as a songwriter. One final thanks must go to my friend Ryan Freeman for giving me the line "I am court jester in the kingdom of apathy". I told him I'd find a way to use that in a song. Kudos.

lyrics

I can't stand me now
Created me to be
It's not who you are
I feel so wrong
Coming face to face
To lie, to lie, to lie

Actions that we take
Actions that we make govern who we are
To see inside
Darken everything
To hide, to hide, to hide

Go on, look at you, you mess
Look on, confess
Don't you recognize the face?
Recognize the face
Recognize the change?
Recognize the change

Mirrored images of the man I see
Who I used to be
I used to care
The damage has been done
You can't take it back, counterfeit faker
I am court jester in the kingdom of apathy
Stop while you're ahead before you end up dead
It's not who you are
It's not who you are

about

The Enigmatic Foe Knoxville, Tennessee

With sharp lyrics, the playful pop bite of the best of the 70s and 80s, and the kind of self-deprecation usually reserved for a Woody Allen movie, Jared Colinger's lyrics run the gamut from the joy of new love to disillusionment with the old, from wanting to like yourself to being afraid of what we have in our minds.

The new music coming in 2023.
