about

I was starting to get the knack of using Acid Pro 4.0 with the loops and multi-tracking when I recorded "Punishment". Against my better judgement and pride, I must confess the ending solos to this song are loops. I was too lazy to come up with solos and they probably wouldn't have sounded as cool or as technical. I recorded many versions of "Punishment" because I couldn't choose ONE. I did a funk version, an acoustic one, a hard rock one, and a "happy" version which I recorded for a friend. By far, the best one turned out to be the "latin" one though my friend will debate me on the merits of the "happy" mix. As far as the lyric is concerned, I've gotten a bit of flak for misinterpretation. I was noticing a trend in my songwriting that annoyed me, that I was repeating myself, writing about the same old thing. I was also having girl/friend problems and I didn't feel like they understood. It felt like my friends were deserting me or not including me in outings. I was miserable and I wanted everyone to feel as miserable as I did; in a word I wanted to punish them. Some fans wondered if the song had some S&M overtones referencing lines like "get down on all fours, i'll show you my world" but that couldn't be farther from the truth. That line was meant to show dominance and crushing of the spirit now the character in the song successfully conveyed his pain.

lyrics

How do I make you feel and make it seem like a punishment?
I’m running out of ways to describe the anxiety
Contractually obligated, sign it on the line
You said you would stick by through thick and thin

How can I make you see so it feels like a punishment?
I refuse to be the only one, so I’ll take you with me
and make it like a punishment
Yeah, I’ll make it like a punishment

Deny my touch, deny your rights, deny our hearts
I’ll show you mine, just to break yours
Get down all fours
I’ll show my world and all of the fragments
Until it feels like a punishment
until it feels like a punishment
I refuse to be the only one
I hope this feels like a punishment
This is your punishment

about

The Enigmatic Foe Knoxville, Tennessee

With sharp lyrics, the playful pop bite of the best of the 70s and 80s, and the kind of self-deprecation usually reserved for a Woody Allen movie, Jared Colinger's lyrics run the gamut from the joy of new love to disillusionment with the old, from wanting to like yourself to being afraid of what we have in our minds.

The new music coming in 2023.
