about

This is one of the oldest songs in my repertoire. This is a song about letting people get close to us and whether or not they will stick around the more they find out. It took me a long time to be comfortable with my own personal baggage and let people get to know the real me. I'd filter out the unpleasantries to save them the burden. Granted it gave me a complex and did nothing but harm. The phrase "putty on the newsprint of my heart" came to me during a theater competition I was judging, possibly February of 2000. I held onto it until I could figure out what I meant by it. In fact, it takes me awhile to explain the second verse with the "old man's autograph". Lastly, I LOVE the guitar solo because it makes me sound like I can play better than I actually do.

lyrics

Someone has touched my darker heart
so long, so long
Now that it’s out she turns away
so long, so long

Try to contain it all
you don’t know what to do with it
You think you’re above me
you’re nothing but a hypocrite

Only as close as you should be
so long, so long
To reach out so far, your mouth well-shut
so long, so long

I read in the papers for an old man’s autograph
You could be the putty on the newsprint of my heart
I’d take you with me if you were bold to start
but you’re content to play the fool
I’m quite content to let you

so long

about

The Enigmatic Foe Knoxville, Tennessee

With sharp lyrics, the playful pop bite of the best of the 70s and 80s, and the kind of self-deprecation usually reserved for a Woody Allen movie, Jared Colinger's lyrics run the gamut from the joy of new love to disillusionment with the old, from wanting to like yourself to being afraid of what we have in our minds.

The new music coming in 2023.
