about

Reciprocation was originally called "Asshole" because I had a habit of titling songs from the choruses. After the sensible prompting from Jason Martin, I renamed it. I am quite fond of this song, its chord progression, chorus, instrumentation and structure. Definitely one of my best constructed pop songs.

lyrics

I’ve been trying to get close to you, but everything comes to nothing
Every time I lay it on the line, you smile at me and say forbidden things
Then you brush it off, you don’t feel the same
Though you’re miserable, don’t want things to change

She wants an asshole
“You’re such a good friend”, “you always listen when no one is around”
Still she wants a blackened eye
So pardon if I told you so
I wish you’d realize how much I feel for you
Though it’s never reciprocated
I know you’ll regret the one you dated

Every time you’re hurt you build a wall
I try to prove I’m not like all the rest
No matter what I do you won’t let go
I’m standing here, just please open up
Make up your mind, don’t blind yourself
Then you return to what you want

She wants an asshole,
“you’re so convenient”, “not like the other guys”, “so fun to be around”
Every time he holds you down to punish you I’ll pick you up
I wish you’d realize how much I feel for you
But it’s never reciprocated
I know you’ll regret the one you dated

about

The Enigmatic Foe Knoxville, Tennessee

With sharp lyrics, the playful pop bite of the best of the 70s and 80s, and the kind of self-deprecation usually reserved for a Woody Allen movie, Jared Colinger's lyrics run the gamut from the joy of new love to disillusionment with the old, from wanting to like yourself to being afraid of what we have in our minds.

The new music coming in 2023.
